Joan Davis, CSJP (1935-2026)

Joan Honora Davis was born on May 23, 1935, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was the fourth of six children, five girls and one boy, born to William and Bridget (Kenny) Davis.

Joan first met the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace while growing up in Jersey City. She came to know and appreciate the sisters through their various ministries, their personal friendliness, and their inspiring lives. The desire to become a member of the Congregation led her to St. Michael Novitiate in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Reflecting on her novitiate days, she viewed this time “as one of much learning, spiritual growth, some fun, and a bonding that has lasted a lifetime.”

After the period of initial religious formation and continued professional studies, Sister Joan earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. She taught in St. Lukes’ in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey; Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany, New Jersey; St. Genevieve in Van Nuys, California; Annunciation in Paramus, New Jersey; and Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, New Jersey.

Reflecting on her years of service in the field of education, Sister Joan writes “Witnessing the growth and development of my students, I found my ministry affirming. This, coupled with the caring and cooperation of my colleagues, helped lessen the burden of an otherwise very challenging career.”

Surrounded by love and care, Sister Joan died peacefully at St. Michael Villa in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on March 3, 2026. She will be missed for her quiet, prayerful, and faithful presence, especially among her sisters in community on the St. Michael Villa Campus.

Sister Joan was predeceased by her brother Michael Joseph Davis and sisters, Margaret Coppla, Patricia Davis, Eileen Vanderbilt, and Mary Sweeney. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A combined wake service and Liturgy of Christian Burial was held on March 6, 2026, at St. Michael Villa, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey.
