Justice and Disarmament Dialogue

On May 22, 2020, sisters and associates joined Peace through Justice Facilitator Frank McCann, CSJP-A for a dialogue on justice and disarmament via Zoom. The featured speakers were Martha Hennessy, Patrick O'Neill and Pat Gaffney. Ms. Hennessy and Mr. O'Neill are members of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7. Ms. Gaffney was the General Secretary of Pax Christi UK for 29 years and the first recipient of the CSJP Peacemaker Award in 2002.

Organizations and Movements Against Nuclear Weapons

Status: the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Basic Obligations:

  • Prohibits developing, testing, producing, stockpiling nuclear weapons

  • Bans using or threatening to use nuclear weapons

  • Forbids stationing, installing, or deploying nuclear weapons on State Parties’ territories

  • Obligates State Parties to provide victim assistance and help with environmental remediation necessary due to testing or use of nuclear weapons.

The treaty was passed 7 July 2017 with the votes of 122 nations.

No existing nuclear power nation voted for the treaty.

The Netherlands was the sole NATO nation to attend the negotiations and the sole “no” vote on the treaty.

50 states are required to ratify the treaty for it to become international law. Belize became the 37th state to ratify on 19 May 2020.

Washington State Against Nuclear Weapons

NJ Assembly passed AR230 on May 23, 2019, urging the federal government to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
