Sukyi Hur Professes First Vows
Sister Sukyi Hur, CSJP professed her first vows as a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace on Saturday, October 2nd in the chapel at St. Mary-on-the-Lake in Bellevue, Washington.
"In response to God's call to seek justice, to love tenderly, and to walk in the way of peace, I, Sukyi Hur, in the presence of Margaret Byrne, Congregation Leader, and in the presence of the community gathered here, vow to God poverty, celibacy and obedience for three years, according to the Constitutions of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace."
A native of Gyong-nam, South Korea, Sister Sukyi converted to the Catholic faith from Buddhism following high school and came to the U.S. in 1997. She received a doctorate in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture in 2006, teaching and working at South Baylo University in Anaheim, California., where she worked in the research center with HIV/AIDS patients and in the herbal department. She received her Washington State Acupuncture License in 2008.
She made contact with the CSJP community in 2004 after being attracted by the community’s spirit and charism. Her two-year novitiate included ministries at a Korean medical clinic, learning center and home for the blind in New Jersey and at a day center for homeless people in London, England.
