Sister Ann Crawley Describes Conditions in Haiti
It surely has surely been a long year of suffering for our very poor people of Haiti and sorry to say there doesn't seem to be an end in view as yet. Between earthquake, floods and hurricane all causing so much suffering, pain and loss of life and now the dreadful cholera epidemic. We have a constant flow of about fifty or more in patients every day and have treated about three hundred in patients in the past ten days. God love them, they suffer dreadfully from stomach cramps which is due to the loss of body fluids since cholera causes persistent diarrhoea and vomiting. Most people recover in a few days when treated with intravenous fluids though many have died and thousands are infected. It will take some time before we shall see "the light of day" Keep these very special people in your good prayers and you might have Mass offered for their beloved dead who are buried in mass graves without any formal funeral service or blessing...though I always whisper a blessing of peace as they arrived at the "Tents" and try to be with them when they are dying. I thank God every day for the honour of serving his poor suffering people. As you can imagine I am up to my eyes in work and smelling ++ of chlorax so I better finish and get back to my some fifty patients, most of whom are little children. I feel very privileged to have my health and strength and to be a CSJP presence to these very special people of God. Whisper the odd prayer for me Coralie. My love to all the Sisters. Bless your heart, Coralie. Ann
