Haiti Update - July 5, 2010in Haiti

Three Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace arrived in Haiti in October, 2010. In January they became an integral part of the story which enfolded after the devastating earthquake changed the lives of Haitians so drastically.

Many of us tend to forget that the people of Haiti are still dealing with that 35 seconds which occured on January 12, 2010. Countless children, women, and men lost an arm or a leg as the result of the earthquake. What they desperately need now are prosthetic limbs to enable them to get on with their lives.

New LimbTowards the end of our last upate (May 19) we mentioned a long air-conditioned container truck which has been set up as a prosthetic limb laboratory, a much needed facility since after the earthquake, and one that will serve the people of Haiti for many years.

Dr. John Lovejoy, an orthopedic surgeon from Jacksonville, Florida arrived in Haiti four days after the earthquake and has been working with others on the team to provide earthquake victims with prosthetic arms and legs. Using as their motto, "The difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a little time" these people have enabled many children, women, and men to receive their new limbs. There are still Kidscountless others who are still waiting to receive theirs. In June, a news station in Jacksonville presented the story of this team. Click here to watch the video. (There is a short advertisement at the beginning.)

The cost of a limb is approximately $300! Go to Crudem's website to donate!

In the months which have followed since the earthquake, thousands of people have volunteered their time to help the people of Haiti. Doctors and nurses from PeaceHealth and Holy Name Medical Center have been some of the volunteers. View a video prepared by one of the Holy Name doctors.
