Weaving Prayers of Peace - International Day of Peace Celebration
Sisters, Associates and friends gathered with representatives of various traditions at the Peace and Spirituality Center in Bellevue, Washington on September 19, 2010 in anticipation of the International Day of Peace.
The United Nations International Day of Peace - marked every year on September 21 - is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, "Peace Day" has
grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small.
The gathering at the Peace and Spirituality Center was entitled "Weaving Prayers for Peace: A Multi-Tradition Celebration for International Day of Peace." Representatives of the Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Native American, Islamic, Baha'i and Christian Traditions shared reflections on peace. Betsey Beckman was our "weaver," helping us weave together the threads of peace through liturgical dance, while pianist Laura Ash led us in song using the many words for Peace ... Shanti, Kanji, Shalom, Ha'eye, Salaam, Unity.
